WHAT IS A HEALTH SAVINGS ACCOUNT (HSA)?

It is a tax-favored savings arrangement for individuals covered by high deductible health plans. With these types of plans, an individual must pay for a certain amount of medical expenses before the plan begins to pay for medical expenses. In exchange for paying a certain amount upfront, individuals enjoy less expensive insurance premiums. Individuals can use the money they save in an HSA to pay for medical expenses incurred by themselves, their spouses, or their dependents.

Some examples of qualified medical expenses that HSAs can cover include: doctor's visits, prescriptions, medical transportation, certain dental and vision care, COBRA health plan premiums, health plan premiums when unemployed, and qualified long-term care insurance and health insurance after age 65.
